Supported housing benefit calculator

In supported or exempt accommodation your rent is usually paid by Housing Benefit from the council, not the Universal Credit housing amount. See what Universal Credit you could get for living costs, and what you'd pay yourself.

This is an estimate, not advice. Rates for 2026/27, last checked 12 October 2026.

Question 1 of 11

Who would you live with?

Your household for Universal Credit: you, and a partner if you live together.

This is an estimate, not advice. It uses the official 2026/27 rates from GOV.UK and the Valuation Office Agency, last checked 12 October 2026. What you actually get is decided by DWP or your council, and can depend on things we don't ask about.

Questions people ask

Usually not. If you live in supported or sheltered housing, such as a hostel, that gives you care, support or supervision, you claim Housing Benefit from the council for your rent instead. You can still claim Universal Credit for your living costs. Service charges for things like meals, heating, energy in your room or support are usually yours to pay.

Housing such as a hostel or supported house where the landlord, or someone on their behalf, gives you care, support or supervision. Your rent there is covered by Housing Benefit from the council rather than the Universal Credit housing amount.

Often a weekly service charge for things Housing Benefit doesn't cover, such as heating, energy in your room, meals or some support. Enter it in the calculator to see it next to your income.

This is an estimate, not advice. We use the official 2026/27 rates published on GOV.UK, including the Local Housing Allowance rates, last checked 12 October 2026, and match postcodes to rental areas with the Valuation Office Agency's LHA-Direct. Your real award is decided by DWP (Universal Credit, PIP, ESA, Carer's Allowance) or your council (Housing Benefit). If something can't be worked out from your answers, we say so rather than guess.

From 6 April 2026 there are two rates. £429.80 a month if you told DWP about your health condition before 6 April 2026 (or already had LCWRA), have a severe, lifelong condition, or are nearing the end of life. £217.26 a month if you declared your condition on or after 6 April 2026 and it isn't severe and lifelong.

Yes. PIP isn't affected by your income or savings and doesn't reduce Universal Credit. In 2026/27 the daily living part is £76.70 or £114.60 a week, and the mobility part £30.30 or £80 a week. In Scotland you apply for Adult Disability Payment instead, at the same rates.

Where our figures come from

Rates for 2026/27, last checked 12 October 2026. Every figure is copied from an official page; if a rate isn't published, or your postcode can't be matched, we say we can't work that part out.
